South Australia Energy Market Facts

  • Wholesale prices can go negative during high solar/wind periods
  • VPP participation is common and well-compensated

Frequently Asked Questions: South Australia Batteries

Why is South Australia great for home batteries?

SA has extreme price volatility - wholesale prices swing from -$50/MWh to $15,000/MWh. Smart batteries can capture this arbitrage. Plus SA's grid isolation makes backup power valuable during interstate outages.

Are SA VPP programs worth joining?

SA has mature VPP programs (Tesla Energy Plan, AGL, Origin) offering 10-20c/kWh for grid support events. Combined with arbitrage, SA battery owners often achieve the best returns in Australia.

What happened to the SA Home Battery Scheme?

The SA Home Battery Scheme has ended, but SA residents can access the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate (~$372/kWh, max $18,600) for VPP-capable batteries commissioned from July 2025. SA REPS VPP incentives (up to $2,050) can also be stacked with the federal rebate.
